• Fine table salt
• Watercolor paints, liquid watercolors, or food coloring diluted with water
• Pipettes, droppers, or small paintbrushes
• Heavyweight paper, watercolor paper, or cardstock
• Tray, baking sheet, or newspaper (for catching excess salt)
1. Create Your Design
Use white glue to draw flowers, stems, leaves, or other simple shapes directly onto the paper. Make the glue lines thick enough to hold the salt.
2. Add Salt
While the glue is still wet, generously sprinkle salt over the entire design. Carefully shake off the excess salt onto a tray.
3. Add Color
Using a pipette, dropper, or paintbrush, gently touch diluted watercolor paint to the salted lines. Watch as the color travels along the salt through capillary action.
4. Experiment
Try different colors next to each other and observe how they blend. Children can learn about color mixing while creating their artwork.
5. Let It Dry
Lay the artwork flat and allow it to dry completely, usually several hours or overnight.
Salt painting introduces children to:
• Color mixing
• Fine motor skills
• Creative expression
• Basic science concepts such as absorption and capillary action
• Draw the design lightly in pencil first if younger children need guidance.
• Flowers, butterflies, rainbows, hearts, and names work especially well.
• Liquid watercolors often produce the brightest results.
• Skip glitter if possible; the salt and colors already create plenty of visual interest.
Adult supervision is recommended.
Avoid contact with eyes and wash hands after the activity.
∙ 1/2 cup baking soda
∙ 1 cup white distilled vinegar
∙ Food coloring (various colors)
∙ Muffin tin or shallow tray Small cups, spoons, or squeeze bottles
∙ Protective table covering for easy cleanup
1. Set Up Your Space
Place a muffin tin or shallow tray on a flat surface. Cover the area with newspaper, wax paper, or a plastic tablecloth to make cleanup easier.
2. Add the Baking Soda
Spoon about 1 tablespoon of baking soda into each section of the muffin tin.
3. Add Color
Place 3-4 drops of food coloring onto the baking soda in each section. Use different colors for a vibrant effect.
4. Create the Fizzing Reaction
Slowly pour or squeeze vinegar onto the colored baking soda. Watch as the mixture bubbles, fizzes, and erupts with colorful foam.
Encourage children to:
• Mix different colors
• Add more or less vinegar
• Observe which combinations create the biggest fizz
This activity introduces children to a simple chemical reaction. When baking soda (a base) mixes with vinegar (an acid), carbon dioxide gas is produced, creating the exciting fizzing bubbles.
Adult supervision is recommended. Avoid contact with eyes and wash hands after the activity.
